Popular horror series’ next installment might be a long way down the road, but today, we are going to cover Resident Evil 9 release date, story, and more.
Resident Evil 9 will finish Capcom’s critically acclaimed contemporary trilogy. We go into all the rumors and specifics because, as we all know, the devil is in the details. The long-awaited Resident Evil announcement has finally arrived. Will we be able to look forward to Resident Evil 9? And just how many Resident Evil games are there now? Resident Evil 9 is said to be the final installment in Capcom’s current Biohazard trilogy, which also includes Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil Village, and whatever cryptic title they have planned for RE9.
The Resident Evil game series has not only been a huge hit with fans of the legendary survival horror series, but it has also drawn a completely new audience. It can be difficult to strike this mix of delighting both fans and newbies, but Capcom looks to be on a roll. So, what can we look forward to in Resident Evil 9? Despite being direct sequels, the latter two games have drastically distinct tones. Whereas the first game in the series was heavily influenced by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Resident Evil: Village deviated significantly into more imaginative terrain.
Resident Evil 9 release date
However, we may be getting ahead of ourselves. The first question, which is presumably on everyone’s mind, is when Resident Evil 9 will be released. Let’s take a short look at the Resident Evil game release chronology. Resident Evil Village was set to be released on May 7, 2021, more than four years after the previous game. It’s worth mentioning that the Covid epidemic most certainly contributed to the game’s delay, but this information offers us an indication of how long it takes Capcom to build one of these games.
After all, the epidemic isn’t completely finished, and it might play a role in Resident Evil 9’s delays. Nonetheless, given Capcom’s track record, the next game in the series will most certainly be released in 2024. According to industry source Dusk Golem, the RE 9 game has been in production since 2018 and will have been in development for longer than any previous Resident Evil game when it eventually arrives.
RE9 started dev in 2018, when it releases it'll be by far the RE game that's been in dev the longest (probably about 6-7 years of dev). https://t.co/RKcvcX5fxv

Will it be in first-person?
Resident Evil 9 will, without a doubt, be a first-person horror game. In this aspect, Capcom has done an excellent job of having its cake and eating it as well. While some fans favor the previous games’ third-person perspective, Capcom has been able to satisfy these enthusiasts with its Resident Evil remakes. Meanwhile, the current Resident Evil trilogy has given them the opportunity to experiment with and benefit from new technologies.
Resident Evil 9 story and the characters
Ethan Winters is a video game protagonist who needs a break if there ever was one. The unfortunate guy got his hand severed with a chainsaw, was terrorized by the worst in-laws imaginable, and was then transformed into some sort of strong fungus man. However, before ostensibly dying, he managed to spare his daughter’s life from the forces plotting to use her as a lethal bioweapon. To be honest, the backstory of the Resident Evil games is both complex and insane, making predictions about where it will go next practically difficult.
Will Ethan Winters return in RE9?
However, as previously stated, we know Rosemary (Ethan’s Daughter) is alive, possesses remarkable skills, and is under the tutelage of a mysterious organization. We also know that Resident Evil Village finished with the phrase “The father’s story is now done.” What is left unsaid is that the mother and daughter’s story continues. The conclusion of Resident Evil Village also implies that Rosemary is linked to Resident Evil 7 villain Eveline in some manner, and that the organization does not entirely trust her. We also know that the series’ hero, Chris Redfield, is still around and possibly keeping an eye on things. Also, it is safe to say that Ethan Winters won’t be returning for the upcoming title.
What happens next is anyone’s guess, but there are a few Resident Evil 9 narrative facts we can almost certainly confirm. For starters, Umbrella Corporation will be engaged in some way. Second, an infection of any kind, viral or fungal, will wreak havoc. Finally, Chris Redfield will appear at some time to rescue everyone’s buttocks (and probably punch a boulder). The rest is moonshine, as they say.
Which platforms will Resident Evil 9 be released on?
Capcom has a great track record of not playing favorites, and we don’t anticipate that to alter now that neither Microsoft nor Sony have purchased them. With this in mind, Resident Evil 9 will be released simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. However, there may be a gameplay teaser that favors Sony, like Capcom did with the Resident Evil Village ‘Maiden’ demo. However, given the Resident Evil 9 release date of 2024, the game is unlikely to be released on previous-generation platforms such as the PS4 and Xbox One.
Leaks and the rumoured title
When an anonymous source discloses video game secrets on a site like 4chan, take it with a grain of salt; nonetheless, this is frequently easier said than done. That is precisely the case with Resident Evil 9, which is said to be dubbed Resident Evil: Apocalypse. According to the leaker, the game will take place in a gloomy forest full with folklore-inspired monsters. Given Resident Evil Village’s fairy-tale motifs, this development isn’t especially shocking, and it fits with current horror film trends (The Witch, Midsommar, The Ritual).
The leaker mentioned in the 4chan post, which has since been archived, that the game will contain Capcom’s rendition of a Wendigo monster, as well as something called ‘Goatman.’ The report also claims that Resident Evil 9 would commit to body horror more forcefully than any prior installment in the series, which is significant given the franchise’s reputation for terrible transformations. It’s hard to know how seriously to take these Resident Evil 9 leaks, but if we see a horned Goatman monster in future teasers, I guess the mysterious leaker will be able to claim, ‘I told you so.’
Will Lady Dimitrescu return?
Ok. If you’ve played Resident Evil Village, you know this is most likely a fantasy. But could Capcom really have done that to the Goddess of Girth? Dying pitifully in an explosion of black worm-like fungus, only to be fashioned into a dull-as-hell crystal statue? That is not how the renowned lady should be treated. Capcom, if they know what’s good for them, will give Lady Dimitrescu a well-deserved resurrection in Resident Evil 9. Albert Wesker, for example, has been slain and resurrected countless times, and he’s about as endearing as an ingrown toenail.
Resident Evil Village DLC
While it may not be directly related to Resident Evil 9, the long-rumored Resident Evil Village DLC now has an official release date. The Winters’ Expansion, as it’s been dubbed, will have three parts: the multiplayer Mercenaries minigame, Shadow of Rose narrative DLC, and a new option to play the entire game in third person. Fans of the previous games, as well as those looking to prepare for the Resident Evil 4 remake, will love the third-person option. However, as you can see, developer Capcom is currently swamped, which means a Resident Evil 9 release date is still a long way off.
