One of the more persistent concerns in the age of AI is the potential for automation to replace human jobs. This trend is evident in various sectors, including the niche market of OnlyFans chatters, who engage in online conversations with fans of creators on the platform. According to a WIRED investigation, these chatters are gig workers hired to impersonate top-earning OnlyFans creators, facilitating what is perceived as direct fan interaction.
AI chatters replace human workers on OnlyFans platform
The appeal of OnlyFans largely lies in its model of personal engagement, where creators interact with fans through direct messages for hours. However, managing a high volume of messages poses challenges, leading many creators to outsource messaging tasks to chatters. Traditionally, these chatters were located in countries with lower wage expectations, such as the Philippines, Pakistan, and India. Recently, however, there has been a shift toward using AI chatters as replacements for human workers.
Several startups are now offering AI chatters along with generative AI tools, claiming strong demand from creators. Kunal Anand, founder of an AI OnlyFans chatting service called ChatPersona, noted, “A lot of creators were like, hey, there’s a need.” ChatPersona launched last year and currently serves around 6,000 customers, including individuals and agencies.
According to Anand, ChatPersona operates within OnlyFans’ terms of service, requiring a human to review and send messages generated by the AI. Previous reports indicated that OnlyFans banned AI chatbots, but its current terms of service do not explicitly mention AI chatters. Despite requests for comment, OnlyFans has not provided clarification on this matter.
Growing competition in AI chatting services
The landscape for AI chatters is becoming increasingly competitive. Notable tools include FlirtFlow, ChatterCharms, and Botly, alongside Supercreator, a service offering a range of AI capabilities from script generation to an assistant named Inbox Copilot, which prioritizes high-spending fans.
Eden, a former OnlyFans creator now managing a boutique agency called Heiss Talent, advocates for these technological advancements. She represents five creators who utilize Supercreator’s AI tools, stating, “It’s an insane increase in sales, because you can target people based on their spending.” One feature of Supercreator identifies inactive fans and sends an automated message when they log in, enhancing engagement.
While some AI chatter services are fully automated, Eden prefers that the creators supplement AI-generated messages with their own input to maintain authenticity. “We come up with the core of the message and the AI helps us fill it out,” she explained, emphasizing the desire to keep interactions as genuine as possible.
The trend towards AI chatters highlights a significant transformation in how creators engage with their audience. As AI technology improves and the number of creators utilizing these services increases, questions arise about the long-term implications for human chatters.
