Google has extended the deadline for converting Stadia controllers to Bluetooth mode, now allowing users until December 31, 2025, to make the switch. This decision comes nearly two years after the shutdown of its cloud gaming service, Stadia, which ceased operations in early 2023.
Google extends Stadia controller Bluetooth conversion deadline to 2025
At the time of Stadia’s closure, Google initially set a deadline for the conversion of its proprietary Wi-Fi controllers to Bluetooth. Originally, this deadline was the end of 2023, but as the date approached, Google granted an extension of one year, which has now been further extended. Users can now convert their controllers to Bluetooth through a straightforward process using Chrome 108 or newer. Once the transition is made, however, the controller becomes unusable in Wi-Fi mode.
The Stadia controller’s legacy is noteworthy; it uniquely distinguished Google’s service with a dedicated device tailored for cloud gaming. The controller was designed to connect over Wi-Fi with devices such as the Chromecast Ultra or PC and featured an integrated Bluetooth module. This has allowed users to repurpose their controllers outside of the Stadia service.
In Bluetooth mode, users will need to be aware that some functionality will be lost, such as the 3.5mm jack and USB port for headphones. However, audio can still be used through the 3.5mm jack when the controller is connected via USB-C. As customer support for Stadia and its peripherals has been discontinued, users must ensure they follow the conversion instructions carefully to avoid any complications.
Almost two years post-closure, the Google Stadia controller remains available for purchase through various resale platforms, including eBay. Its availability on the market underscores the device’s potential for continued use in the gaming community, significantly since many players are switching to alternative gaming platforms or setups.
Despite the extensive life left in the controller, it is still unclear whether third-party solutions will remain viable once Google’s official conversion utility is fully defunct. Developers on platforms like GitHub have introduced tools that may aid users looking to retain functionality, yet their long-term viability beyond 2025 is uncertain.
