Google is improving its Google Home app by enabling it to work with a wider selection of Nest cameras, such as older models like the Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Outdoor. Many users no longer find the Nest app relevant as camera management is now streamlined into one application, marking the end of its importance.
In a calculated maneuver, Google began transferring Nest cameras to the Google Home app in the second part of 2023. With time, this procedure has picked up speed, as Google has now started to assist Nest cameras from as early as 2015. Users now have the option to control their Nest Cams solely through the Google Home app, removing the necessity for the Nest app.
Is Google Home replacing the Nest app for good? Here’s what you need to know!
Beginning this week, Google Home Public Preview program participants will see notifications in the Nest and Google Home apps informing them when they can move their cameras. In particular, the Nest Cam IQ Indoor, Nest Cam IQ Outdoor, and Nest Hub Max can now be controlled through Google Home. After the migration, users can view video streams, customize camera configurations, and establish automations without the inconvenience of switching between applications.
One of the features offered is the option to analyze video recordings from both event and timeline perspectives, giving a thorough overview of camera movements. In addition, users can watch live streams from their favorites tab within the Google Home app and manage various important settings, enhancing the user-friendly nature of the experience.
Although migration is supported, it is crucial to note that some features, like the Supersight close-up tracking view, are not currently accessible for the Nest Cam IQ models on the Google Home app. Google has indicated a continuous dedication to incorporating additional functions from the Nest app into the Home app, but the specific timeline details are still unclear.
If users like the previous layout, they can partially revert by switching back to the Nest app if they own the Nest Cam IQ Indoor and Outdoor. Nevertheless, the Nest Hub Max cannot revert to the Nest app after switching.
Nest Cam owners will see a notification in their Nest app when the transfer feature becomes accessible. Alternatively, users can delve into the device settings to start the migration if they prefer a more interactive method. Google intends to fully launch this feature in the upcoming days, so numerous users will likely have access soon.
Updating the Google Home app mirrors Google’s larger plan to integrate its smart home apps. Google is highlighting the importance of convenience by enabling the centralized management of multiple Nest cameras through a single interface. Nest Cam owners will find it convenient to monitor their devices without using multiple apps.
While the Nest app will continue to work, certain devices, such as the Nest Protect smoke detector and Nest x Yale door lock, still function independently. This suggests that not all features will quickly switch over to the Google Home platform, which is important for existing users of these products who may be reluctant to accept the modifications.
