OpenAI has recently hired Gabor Cselle, former co-founder of Twitter alternative Pebble, to align the company with an ambitious, mysterious project to challenge social platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Grok, Elon Musk’s emerging AI-driven social network. While OpenAI’s plans for this sector remain under wraps, Cselle’s hire reflects a strategic pivot as the company ventures into social tech.
OpenAI’s latest hire signals a deeper dive into social technology
Cselle, a seasoned Silicon Valley entrepreneur, joined OpenAI’s team in October, as confirmed by his LinkedIn profile. He announced his position publicly only yesterday in a post on X, hinting at a project that he describes as a steep learning experience and promising future disclosures. Cselle brings a robust resume to OpenAI’s mission, with prior ventures including selling his mobile email startup, reMail, to Google and Namo Media, a native advertising startup later acquired by Twitter.
Excited to share that I’ve joined @OpenAI!
The talent density here is incredible. Learning a lot already. Will share more about what I’m working on in due time.

Notably, Cselle also held a major role at Twitter nearly a decade ago, where he served as a product manager focusing on core user experiences and the home timeline. His experience with Pebble, a Twitter alternative launched in 2022 focusing on community safety and moderation, positions him well to contribute to OpenAI’s ambitions. Although Pebble itself closed in 2022, Cselle’s commitment to building user-centered digital spaces has remained steady, underscoring OpenAI’s potential interest in reshaping how AI interacts with social platforms.
Cselle’s entry into OpenAI arrives at intense competition among AI firms, with OpenAI and its rival Anthropic actively bolstering their rosters with high-profile hires. Over the weekend, Anthropic announced its acquisition of AI talent, recruiting Alex Rodrigues, founder of autonomous trucking company Embark, as an AI safety researcher. Rodrigues is expected to bring a wealth of experience in applied machine learning and operational scaling.
Both OpenAI and Anthropic’s high-stakes recruiting efforts highlight a battle for top-tier talent in the AI industry as each seeks to cement its position in the evolving landscape of social tech. With Cselle on board, OpenAI is poised to add depth to its social network capabilities, fueling speculation about how it will shape its competitive response to X and Grok. As Cselle hints at new developments, OpenAI’s latest edition promises to be an intriguing piece of its strategic playbook.
