It’s been over a decade since PC players have waited with bated breath to get their hands on one of Rockstar’s most iconic games. After all, the wait is almost over. Rockstar has announced that Red Dead Redemption is officially launching on PC later this month, bringing the “Undead Nightmare” expansion with it.
This announcement represents a big moment for the PC gaming community. In 2010, Red Dead Redemption emerged and quickly became a fan favorite. It is still a big fan favorite on consoles like PlayStation. For the first time, PC gamers can experience John Marston’s story with enhanced visuals and improved performance. The day to capture in your calendar is October 29.
You get Red Dead Redemption after 14 years and on PC
Red Dead Redemption was originally released on PlayStation but has passed through several stops. Then, in 2023, they released a PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch port. They’ve confirmed that the game and the “Undead Nightmare” expansion will arrive on PC with specific upgrades designed to take advantage of the platform’s capabilities. The feature additions include native 4k resolution, 144Hz refresh rates, HDR10 support, ultra-wide monitor compatibility, and more.
Fortunately, however, multiplayer won’t be moving along with it. Unlike the PS4 and Xbox One versions, the PC release will house the single-player element—no online mode as the other Rockstar titles had—as the same gripping storyline plays out.
Red Dead Redemption has you play John Marston, who needs to rid the world of the men who were once part of his gang. Although the narrative is set after the events of Red Dead Redemption 2, it is tightly interwoven with the prequel events. This way, fans of the series will finally be able to immerse themselves in the game’s story with the additional polish that modern gaming PCs provide.
Of course, Undead Nightmare is next. The Wild West meets the zombie apocalypse as this standalone expansion brings chaotic, thrilling gameplay to any tabletop with its zombie-filled West. In this alternate reality, John Marston wakes up in a zombie apocalypse. Marston is a player who must guide him as he fights off the undead hordes to save his family. Undead Nightmare’s blend of horror and Western themes still has cult status.
Details on how the release was made technically
Double Eleven, the same producer responsible for last year’s ports for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, handles this PC release. But they’ve also made sure the game makes the most of the power that a PC can offer in terms of visuals, from 4k visuals to Nvidia DLSS 3.7 and FSR 3.0 upscaling technologies. The game will look better if you use a regular monitor or have gotten your hands on ultra-wide and super ultra-wide.
The game should open for preorders soon and will be available alongside Steam at Rockstar’s and Epic Games stores. This may seem disappointing to the fans for not having multiplayer, but the improvements in the graphics and the new Undead Nightmare expansion feature add a lot to look forward to.
With Rockstar’s history of delayed PC releases, the return of Red Dead Redemption to PC has reignited conversations among fans. Games like Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, and so on came on various platforms at different times. Now that we are entering 2020, and with a new Grand Theft Auto VI coming, many people have started to wonder if we will see the next installment of the GTA series available for the PC sooner than the Xbox.
Fans are awaiting more news, and rumors abound about a Red Dead Redemption 2 PlayStation 5 version. However, if PC players want to give John Marston’s adventure their first taste, they must wait until they release Red Dead Redemption on October 29, 2024.
