Valve’s commitment to deliver critical support for Arch Linux growth is the foundation of this partnership. SteamOS 3 relies on Arch Linux to operate the Steam Deck. Valve chose Arch because it suits their strategic plan, owing to its slim build and low resource usage for handheld gaming. Thanks to Valve’s investments, Arch Linux will be ready to satisfy its needs related to SteamOS, raising the standard of the open-source ecosystem.

Polyak’s comments on the mailing list public forum highlight the collaboration’s ability to let the Arch Linux team deal with existing problems faster. Valve’s backing positions Arch Linux to see gifts that would have been unattainable with just a volunteer-focused approach.

Though Valve has been involved with open-source software before, this collaboration represents a fresh installment in its link to FOSS projects; with its Proton compatibility layer in place, Valve has boosted Linux gaming since Windows alternatives can now be accessed more conveniently. Through direct support of Arch Linux, Valve returns to the community.
