If you’re a Wordle fan, things just got more immersive with VR. Viral word game sensation Wordle now has an official app for its Meta Quest. For fans of the game, this means that guessing five-letter words is much closer to home – or rather, right before your eyes. The app is free and available for Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro.
The gameplay remains unchanged in this virtual version of Wordle. According to the New York Times (NYT) and Meta’s blog, the goal remains the same: six guesses to solve the daily five-letter puzzle. What’s different? Instead of staring at your phone screen, you’re surrounded by the familiar grid of the game in a virtual space. The app doesn’t take away from the game that gamers already love; it just moves the experience into an immersive VR world.

Jonathan Knight, NYT Games’ general manager, expressed excitement about bringing the game to Meta Quest. In a blog post from Meta, Knight highlighted how Wordle’s simple design makes it an ideal candidate for virtual reality, emphasizing the game’s accessible interface that has won over audiences worldwide. While some may have expected the VR platform to offer a new take on the gameplay, it seems the NYT is content with sticking to the game’s familiar formula, just in a new environment.
For those hoping that other NYT games like Connections or Strands might join Wordle in the virtual realm, don’t hold your breath. Elizabeth MacAulay Young, a representative from the NYT, confirmed that there are no current plans to expand their game catalog into VR just yet.
