OpenAI is set to make a big change to ChatGPT by introducing eight new voices. This exciting update was recently discovered by engineers who found these voices through reverse engineering. While these voices aren’t available to everyone yet, the news has sparked a lot of interest and curiosity about how they might improve user interactions.
Current voices and the new additions
The new voices were spotted by users who found a “read aloud” icon in a beta version of the ChatGPT web app. This led to the discovery of eight new voices, each with its own codename:
- Fathom
- Glimmer
- Harp
- Maple
- Orbit
- Rainbow
- Reef
- Ridge
- Vale

The new voices are expected to be more realistic and emotional compared to the current options. They will also be better at mimicking non-verbal sounds and reacting to text styles like italics and bold. This means conversations with ChatGPT will become more engaging and personalized.
Right now, ChatGPT offers four voices: Breeze, Cove, Ember, and Juniper. You can try them by clicking here. Remember the Sky voice? It was removed because it sounded too much like a famous actress, Scarlett Johansson. Now, OpenAI will likely ensure that the new voices don’t resemble any real-life celebrities or public figures to prevent similar issues.
When will they be available?
It’s not clear yet when these new voices will be officially released. The current interface might not have enough space to add eight more voices, so a major update could be needed. We’re all waiting for OpenAI to announce when these voices will be integrated into ChatGPT.
