Google’s AI research and development division, DeepMind, has found itself in the midst of controversy after it was reported that at least 200 employees are unhappy with their parent company’s defense contracts. In a letter circulated internally back in May, these workers expressed concerns about Google’s involvement with military organizations and how this impacts the company’s image as a leader in ethical and responsible AI.
The letter, dated May 16th, specifically cites articles regarding Google’s contracts to supply AI and cloud computing services to the Israeli military. According to the employees, any involvement with military and weapon manufacturing contradicts DeepMind’s mission statement and its stated AI principles.
This has sparked a culture clash between Google and DeepMind, which was acquired by the tech giant in 2014.
A clash of values
Despite Google’s pledge in 2018 that DeepMind’s technology would never be used for military or surveillance purposes, these contracts raise questions about the company’s commitment to this promise.
The fact that over 200 employees have signed the letter shows that there is a significant portion of staff who are unhappy with this situation and feel compelled to speak out.
The promise betrayed?

The concerns raised by DeepMind workers regarding Google’s defense contracts serve as a reminder that the development and deployment of AI technology must be done with careful consideration for its potential consequences.
As we continue to navigate this complex landscape, it’s essential for tech companies like Google to remain transparent and accountable to their employees, customers, and the broader society.
