Recently, the Twitter for Mac app has vanished from the Mac App Store. Although X (formerly Twitter) hasn’t officially confirmed why, it seems likely that the company has removed the app.
End of an era – the Twitter Mac app is no longer on the App Store
— Vedant (@vedantapps) July 31, 2024
Twitter for Mac has had a complicated history. It was updated and rebuilt several times before Elon Musk took over Twitter, which has since been rebranded as X. Despite its issues, the app was modern enough to remain functional, with features like automatic updates for new posts. However, it still carried the old Twitter branding and was never updated to reflect the new X brand. Also, it wasn’t updated for 6 months.
What does this mean for users?
With Twitter for Mac no longer available in the App Store, users who haven’t already downloaded it are out of luck. X might also decide to disable the app entirely for those who still have it installed, making it unusable.
What are the alternatives?
So, what should Mac users do now? The X iPad app, which can run on Apple Silicon Macs, is a possible replacement. This app, designed with Apple’s Catalyst technology, allows iPad apps to work on Macs. However, it doesn’t offer the same automatic post-loading feature that Twitter for Mac had.
Current workarounds
For those who still have the old Twitter for Mac app, there’s a temporary solution: you can keep using the app by dismissing a notice that pops up. But this fix might not last forever. Moving to the X iPad app is a step forward, but it doesn’t fully replace the features that users liked in the old Twitter for Mac app.
In summary, the removal of Twitter for Mac from the App Store is a major change for Mac users. As X continues to develop, it will be interesting to see how they address the needs of their Mac users and what new options might become available.
