The Spotify lyrics paywall made music fans unhappy, but now someone’s backing down. Free users will once again be able to see the lyrics to their favorite tracks without having to dig into their wallets.

The Spotify lyrics paywall was first introduced in May, limiting free users to viewing lyrics for only three songs per month. The move caused backlash from many users who felt left out of the singing party. However, Spotify has now decided to remove this restriction and allow all users to access lyrics without any limitations.

The Spotify lyrics paywall saga

When Spotify first introduced its lyrics paywall, it caused a howl from its user base. Free users found themselves in a difficult position, unable to track their favorite tunes beyond the three-songs per-month limit. This change was part of a broader test Spotify had been running since the previous fall.

Many thought the Spotify lyrics paywall was an attempt to steer users toward paid subscriptions. However, this strategy was not well received by users who were used to having full access to lyrics. It was an important move for Spotify with free users, as it tried to push some of them to Premium, but it resulted in a drop in free users.

In a surprising decision, Spotify has decided to remove the Spotify lyrics paywall for free users. The company spokesperson stated that they are always testing and fine-tuning their features and that availability may vary across different tiers, markets, and devices.

Spotify plans to expand the availability of lyrics for free users worldwide in the coming weeks. The move aims to enable more people to view lyrics without restrictions and effectively remove the Spotify lyrics paywall, which has been a source of frustration for many.

During a recent earnings call, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek hinted at plans to improve the free user experience. The removal of the Spotify lyrics paywall appears to be part of these improvements.

Daniel Ek stated that the company is focusing on improvements to the free product based on performance in specific markets. While Spotify didn’t specifically mention the lyrics paywall, it’s clear that the company is listening to user feedback and adjusting accordingly.

As Spotify continues to fine-tune its offerings, users can expect more updates and improvements to the free tier in the coming months. The removal of the Spotify lyrics paywall is just one step in this ongoing process of improving the user experience.
