Bethesda Game Studios has made history by becoming the first Microsoft-owned game studio to unionize. This exciting development sees Bethesda’s employees uniting under the Communications Workers of America (CWA), setting a new standard in the gaming industry.
Famous for hit games like Starfield, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout, Bethesda’s staff have banded together for better working conditions and a stronger collective voice. A total of 241 employees from Maryland and Texas, including artists, engineers, programmers, and designers, have joined the CWA.
“It is clear that every worker can benefit from bringing democracy into the workplace and securing a protected voice on the job. We’re thrilled to get down to brass tacks and win a fair contract, proving that our unity is a source of real power to positively shape our working conditions, our lives, and the company as a whole.”

Changing the game
Bethesda’s unionization is part of a bigger trend in the gaming world. Earlier this year, ZeniMax Studios, Bethesda’s parent company, saw its quality assurance workers form the largest union in the industry at the time, with 300 members. This was soon surpassed by 600 quality assurance workers at Activision, another Microsoft-owned company, who also joined the CWA.
Despite the challenges, Microsoft has recognized the union. Bethesda’s Maryland employees will join CWA Locals 2108, and those in Texas will join CWA Locals 6215. This move puts Bethesda alongside other CWA members at SEGA of America and Tender Claws, showing a growing movement towards unionization in the industry.
How to beat the Microsoft Anti-Union Boss? Bethesda shows the way
Bethesda’s success in unionizing, despite the anti-union stance often seen in big companies like Microsoft, is a big win for the gaming industry. This unionization is proof that collective action works and marks a major step towards fairer working conditions for game developers.
As more studios follow Bethesda’s lead, the gaming industry is likely to see a shift towards better labor practices. Bethesda’s breakthrough is more than just a win for its employees; it represents a key moment in the fight for workers’ rights in the tech and gaming sectors.
Stay tuned as this movement grows and reshapes the future of gaming. Which studio will be next to join the unionized ranks? The game is on.
