Rumors have provided us with information about the iPhone 16, which will be released in the fall. So what awaits us in iPhone 16? Here’s all we know…
A leak discovered by Nicolás Alvarez and reported by MacRumors suggests that Apple could equip all four iPhone 16 models with the same A-series chip, called A18, according to naming conventions.
Leak reveals chip choice
The leak stems from code found in Apple’s internal systems. The code contains identifiers for various iPhone models, including several new models not associated with existing devices. These identifiers generally follow the numbering scheme used for Apple’s flagship iPhones.
For example, the code mentions iPhone identifiers such as iPhone17,1, iPhone17,2, iPhone17,3, iPhone17,4 and iPhone17,5. The consistent starting number (17) in all these identifiers indicates that a single chip is used throughout the iPhone 16 series.
For example again, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus (which use the A16 Bionic chip) have the identifiers iPhone 15,4 and iPhone 15,5, respectively. In contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max (powered by the A17 Pro chip) have the identifiers iPhone 16.1 and iPhone 16.2. iPhones with A16 chips have identifiers starting with 15, while those with A15 chips start with 14, and so on.
Assuming Apple maintains its consistent naming scheme, this leak aligns with previous rumors and leaks suggesting that all iPhone 16 models share the same chip. Five model numbers appear in the leaked code, but only four are likely linked to the iPhone 16 series. The remaining identifier could be for a future iPhone SE model, but its exact purpose remains unclear at the moment.
