Previously an ad-free gaming and social platform, Discord's introduction of ads in the form of "Sponsored Challenges" to generate revenue has led to mixed reactions from users.

Discord has become an indispensable platform for gamers in recent years and has become a game-oriented social platform. Until 2021, the platform, which offered an ad-free experience, managed to attract many users with this stance. But according to the latest news, the ad-free period is ending.

As someone who actively uses Discord, the arrival of ads on the platform may attract the reaction of many players like me. Here are all the details…

Gamers to see ads on Discord

The Wall Street Journal reports that Discord will begin running in-app ads next week. This new advertising model, which Discord calls “Sponsored Challenges,” will be offered in collaboration with game makers. Users can earn in-game or in-platform gifts by completing various tasks while playing games with Discord friends or viewers.

The news that Discord will be open to ads has caused mixed reactions among players. Some argue that they would prefer the platform to offer an ad-free experience and that this change will break Discord’s spirit. Other players believe that ads will contribute to the platform’s development and help fund new features.

How will Sponsored Tasks work?

In the “Sponsored Missions” system, game developers can partner with Discord to offer a variety of missions to players. Players who complete the missions can earn in-game or in-platform rewards.

Some players are concerned that the Sponsored Missions system could lead to spam and unwanted content. It has also been criticized that it may encourage players to complete ads rather than play the game.

Discord argues that users can turn off ads in the Settings menu, which is more than most other platforms allow. The company also claims Sponsored Tasks will provide players with a fun and rewarding experience.

Discord’s opening up to ads is an important milestone for the platform’s future. Time will tell how the change will affect the platform’s user base and how players will receive it.
