- Meta is introducing controls to limit users’ exposure to political content on Instagram and Threads.
- The new feature reduces political noise and polarization on these social media platforms.
- While it won’t completely eliminate political posts, the setting offers more control for users who want to avoid them.
With the growing need for users to control the visibility of political content on social media platforms, Meta has added an opt-out setting to Instagram and Threads that limits “political content” suggestions.
While social media platforms have been the subject of intense debate over the spread of political content in recent years, it’s great to see such a feature coming. Users will no longer be exposed to political content, especially in politically poorly governed countries. In short, people will have a clearer mind. Thanks to Meta!
Meta to limit “political content” suggestions on Instagram and Threads
According to Meta, the move is part of an effort to curb political polarization and disinformation on the platform. In the past, platforms like Facebook and Twitter have been accused of contributing to the spread of political content and manipulation. Meta hopes this new feature will help users better control their political experience on the platform.
The new feature gives users more control over political content. By limiting political content from accounts you don’t follow, you may see less political noise in your feed. However, this setting does not completely eliminate political content. Accounts you follow can continue to share political content.
How do you enable this feature?
This setting is pretty simple to find. You can limit political content suggestions on Instagram or Threads by following the steps below:
- Open the social media platform that you want to limit political content.
- Go to your profile and tap the three lines in the top right corner.
- Click on “Settings“.
- Select “Recommended Content” from the “Account” menu.
- Find the “Political Content” menu and enable the “Limit political content from people you don’t follow” option.
Time will tell how Meta’s new setting will change the visibility and impact of political content on the platform. How users will use the setting and interact with political content remains to be seen.
