Music streaming giant Spotify aims to build on its success in delivering audio content to its more than 600 million users with “Spotify Video Courses“.
Spotify’s new initiative demonstrates its desire to go beyond being a music platform and become a major player in personal development and education.
The platform is constantly evolving. In fact, if you remember, last week, I shared with you that the company will offer authors the same marketing opportunities as musicians.
By the way, Spotify is only testing this feature in the UK for now. Let’s dive into the details!
What is Spotify Video Courses feature?
Spotify Courses will allow users to access video-based courses on the platform and learn about various topics. It is currently partnering with third-party providers such as BBC Maestro, Skillshare, Thinkific and PlayVirtuoso. Courses on offer include music production, design, business, entrepreneurship, personal development and health.
To capitalize on the more than 600 million existing users who already spend time on the platform and are open to new types of content, offer courses to a broad audience who listen to podcasts for personal development and education, and provide an affordable and accessible platform for those who want to learn new skills or improve their knowledge.
The large existing user base will quickly gain access to the e-learning platform. Being a recognized brand will also help the e-learning initiative gain credibility. It has a unique position in the music industry, offering music-related courses such as music production and audio engineering.
On the other hand, the company will have to compete with many platforms, such as Udemy, Coursera, and MasterClass. It will need significant content to offer high-quality and engaging courses. Course pricing will also play an important role in making users willing to use the platform.
It will also need to add more interactive and gamified content to enhance the user experience, offer certifications and micro-degrees to help users document their skills and knowledge, and host live classes and webinars so users can interact with experts in real-time.
Spotify’s Video Courses feature is an important part of its effort to move beyond the music streaming service and create a new revenue stream. Time will tell how successful this initiative will be.
