A lawsuit alleging that stalkers used Apple’s AirTag trackers to stalk their victims is adding salt to the tech giant’s rocky start in 2024.
US District Judge Vince Chhabria denied Apple’s motion to dismiss the class action, allowing the plaintiffs to charge Apple with negligence and product liability.
Apple faces lawsuit alleging AirTags used by stalkers to track victims
The plaintiffs argue that while AirTags are designed to “locate lost items“, they could easily be used as a tracking tool. On the other hand, Apple says that AirTags are designed with “industry-first” security measures and should not be held liable for product misuse.
To share my own opinion on this situation, it never crossed my mind that AirTags could be used to track other people. When I thought about it for a while, I understood people’s concerns about such a situation. Yes! This could be a really scary situation.
The judge’s decision is seen as a significant blow for Apple. If the plaintiffs win the case, Apple could be forced to pay damages, damaging the company’s reputation and financial situation. In addition, the case could call into question the security of AirTag and lead Apple to make changes to its product design.
Meanwhile, we recently shared with you that tech giant Apple has ended its electric car project. Given the company’s challenging times in 2024, the AirTag lawsuit could become a bigger problem for the company.
The outcome of the AirTag case will be an important indicator of Apple’s future. If the plaintiffs win, other tech companies could face similar lawsuits.
