Forget complicated coding! Google Genie has arrived, ready to make your game ideas a reality: Imagine turning a simple doodle into a playable game!

Last week OpenAI wowed us with Sora AI, and now the Google DeepMind team is shaking things up.

And don’t take it from us, but this is not one of the basic AI tools out there. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at Tim Rocktäschel‘s post on X.

I am really excited to reveal what @GoogleDeepMind's Open Endedness Team has been up to 🚀. We introduce Genie 🧞, a foundation world model trained exclusively from Internet videos that can generate an endless variety of action-controllable 2D worlds given image prompts. pic.twitter.com/TnQ8uv81wc

Google Genie in a nutshell

  • No coding degree required: Google Genie breaks down the barriers of game design. No more headaches trying to write complex code, Genie handles the nitty-gritty so you can focus on designing awesome worlds
  • The “Game Whisperer”: By studying a massive pile of gameplay videos, Genie has cracked the code of how games work. It understands the rules of play and how players love to interact, making it the ultimate assistant for your game-building adventures

How does Google DeepMind’s magic happen?

Imagine Google Genie as your very own personal game development genie. Give it a starting point like a doodle, a written idea, or even a super simple sketch, and watch it go!

Genie’s creative toolkit consists of these parts:

  • The video translator: Genie’s special “transformers” work like decoding machines, breaking down videos frame-by-frame to figure out what’s happening and how things move
  • The code master: Genie uses a technique called VQ-VAE to translate the video information into small, easier-to-process pieces. Think of it as giving the genie its own secret language for understanding gameplay
  • The crystal ball: The heart of Genie’s power lies in its “dynamics model”. This acts as its crystal ball, letting it predict the next step in your game based on your input and what it already knows about how games work

Google Genie might still be in its magical lamp, but its potential is out of this world! Picture this: sharing your custom-made game becomes as easy as posting a picture online.

A few genie-isms

Genie is a work in progress, and like us, it has a lot to learn! Right now, it’s a superstar at creating 2D platformer games but building complex 3D worlds takes a bit more practice.

While it gives you easy controls, future versions will likely let you get super detailed with your game mechanics.

How to try Google Genie?

Unfortunately, Google Genie is not currently available for public use. It’s still in a research phase, meaning the Google team is working on refining it and making it even better.

But if you wish to learn more about Google Deepmind’s latest wonder, refer to the links below.

  • Explore the Google Genie demo page
  • Read the Google Genie research paper

Keep an eye on tech news and Google’s AI Blog. They’ll likely announce when Genie is ready for broader testing or if they release a public demo.

It might not be a hands-on experience, but staying informed is the best way to be among the first to test out Google Genie when the opportunity arises!

Ready for adventure?

Head over to Google Genie’s website to see it in action, and get those creative juices flowing! The demos will blow your mind with its ability to imagine turning the simplest doodle into a totally unique game!

This is just the beginning of an incredible journey, and Google Genie might just change the way we play forever. Who knows, maybe one day your custom creations will be the next big thing everyone’s talking about!
