TikTok tests 30-minute uploads to expand content options

TikTok is working on a feature that allows users to upload videos up to 30 minutes long. Here’s all you need to know.

Given the platform’s history of gradually increasing the maximum posting limit over the years, this development is not much of a surprise. So how will this feature work?

TikTok is working on 30-minute uploads

Starting at 15 seconds per clip, TikTok increased its limit to 60 seconds, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes in 2022. Last October, the app started testing 15-minute video uploads, indicating a clear trend towards longer videos.

On the other hand, we should note that 30 minutes may be the upper limit for video length, as Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, already applies this limit per clip without increasing it further.

While some users may question the appeal of 30-minute videos on TikTok, the app’s infrastructure based on the Douyin experience may support this type of content. Longer video uploads could also increase the monetization potential for content creators through pre- and mid-roll ads.

While it is unclear how users will react to TV program-length clips on the app, 30-minute video uploads could solve TikTok’s monetization challenges. Currently, YouTube provides better revenue potential by sharing ad revenue with creators, but this model is not suitable for shorter videos.

The introduction of 30-minute uploads could be a step towards expanded revenue sharing for TikTok creators, positioning the platform as a primary destination for entertainment rather than just an engagement tool for longer video creators. Only time will tell if this experiment will be successful, but it is clear that TikTok is evolving and exploring new opportunities.
