Insomniac Games has fallen victim to a significant cyberattack. The Rhysida hacker group is allegedly demanding a ransom starting at 50 Bitcoin, equivalent to more than $2 million. This demand follows their breach into Insomniac’s security systems, leading to the compromise of sensitive employee data and information on the highly anticipated Wolverine game.
The hackers have reportedly accessed a range of confidential data, including:
- U.S. passport scans
- Personal data from multiple W9 tax forms
- Game screenshots for the upcoming Wolverine game
The personal data is believed to belong to current or former Insomniac Games employees.
Hackers’ ultimatum and Sony’s response
Rhysida has given Insomniac a week to respond to their demands. They have already started auctioning the data to the highest bidder, starting at 50 BTC.
On the leak site, the hacker group stated: “With just 7 days on the clock, seize the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique, and impressive data,” Rhysida said on its leak site.”
“Open your wallets and be ready to buy exclusive data. We sell only to one hand, no reselling, you will be the only owner!”
This year, the group has been involved in other high-profile cyberattacks, including those on the British Library and a U.K. hospital.
Sony, the owner of Insomniac Games, is actively investigating the breach. They have confirmed that no other Sony divisions seem to be impacted by this incident. This is not the first time Sony has faced cyberattacks. Earlier this year, Sony experienced two significant breaches involving employee data theft and a comprehensive hack of the company.
