In a surprising move, the renewed version of the iconic first-person shooter from 1997, Quake 2 Remaster, has actually made it to the podium. Developed by id Software, the remastered edition, aptly titled “Quake 2,” is now available for purchase at the affordable price of $9.99 across a spectrum of platforms, including PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.

This revival comes hot on the heels of the previous remastered version of the original Quake, and it coincides with the launch of QuakeCon, a beloved event in the gaming community. Much like its predecessor, Quake 2 Remaster offers a host of enhancements that cater to contemporary gaming preferences. The revamped version is accessible to subscribers of the Game Pass service, and for those who already owned Quake II through the Microsoft Store, Steam, or Good Old Games (GOG), the updated edition is available as a complimentary update.

First thoughts about the Quake 2 Remaster

Upon glimpsing the released screenshots and trailer, it’s evident that id Software has remained faithful to the essence of the 1997 classic. The remastered edition preserves the original gameplay while incorporating modern amenities such as cloud saves, 4K Ultra HD resolution, and the inclusion of split-screen local and online co-op multiplayer modes. Moreover, the game features a comprehensive FAQ section and an array of accessibility options, ensuring that players of all backgrounds can fully immerse themselves in the experience.

Bethesda, in its press release announcing the Quake 2 Remaster, proudly stated, “Enjoy Quake II’s legendary gameplay, preserved and complete with the original soundtrack by Sonic Mayhem, now enhanced with widescreen support, restored content previously left on the cutting room floor, visual and performance upgrades to make every muzzle flash and gib-plosion pop on-screen and even new levels.”

The package of Quake 2 Remaster offers a substantial content update. Alongside the base game, it includes both original mission packs, “The Reckoning” and “Ground Zero,” which collectively introduce 33 campaign levels and 21 deathmatch maps. But the feast of content doesn’t stop there – players are treated to a free copy of Quake 64 and an all-new expansion titled “Call of the Machine,” crafted by MachineGames. This expansion adds an impressive 28 campaign levels, a deathmatch arena, and an engaging narrative pitting players against a menacing machine that threatens the very fabric of reality.

This Quake 2 Remaster follows in the footsteps of Nvidia’s ray-traced version of the game, launched in 2019 to showcase the company’s RTX technology. While the ray-traced version boasted stunning visuals, it was confined to a limited range of PC hardware. In contrast, the fresh remaster is designed to cater to a broad audience, spanning both current and last-generation gaming platforms.

The return of Quake 2 in remastered form stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of classic games. With a fusion of faithful nostalgia and modern gaming advancements, this release allows players to relive the adrenaline-pumping action of the past while embracing the conveniences of the present. Whether you’re a seasoned Quake veteran or a newcomer eager to explore gaming history, Quake 2 Remaster promises an unforgettable journey through time and technology.
