New Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold
In the pipeline for Galaxy Unpacked July 2023, Samsung’s latest unveilings are rumored to include the fresh-off-the-press Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5. As expected, the rumor mill has been in overdrive in the run-up to the event.
First off, whispers around the Galaxy Z Flip 5 suggest that we could be looking at an array of substantial upgrades. These could potentially include a larger 3.4-inch cover display, offering a crisp resolution of 720 x 748. Leaked images of the gadget seem to support these rumors, showcasing an expansive outer display that stretches from the camera to the hinge – quite an upgrade from the previous 1.9-inch 260 x 512 display seen on the Z Flip 4.
Inside, it seems the 6.7-inch display from its predecessor, the Z Flip 4, is here to stay. A key innovation could be a slimmer fold, enabled by Samsung’s new waterdrop-style hinge. According to leaks from SnoopyTech, these new changes mean the Z Flip 5 could slim down to 15.1mm when folded, down from the 15.9mm of its predecessor.
But that’s not all. There are whispers of tweaks to the beefier Z Fold line as well. The Z Fold 5 might just adopt the waterdrop hinge, lessening the crease’s visibility when unfolded. Its design could be leaner than the Z Fold 4, measuring a mere 13.4mm instead of 14.2mm. A new 12MP telephoto lens could be on the cards, an upgrade from the 10MP on the Fold 4. Apart from these changes, the Z Fold 5 may not stray too far from the successful design of the Z Fold 4, featuring the same 7.6-inch inner display and 6.2-inch outer display, with color options that include blue, cream, and black.
Don’t expect a significant performance surge for these new foldables, however. While rumored to harness the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip that Samsung has incorporated in its S23 series, a leak from SnoopyTech suggests similar storage, battery life, and camera specs to their predecessors. The rumored spec sheet for the Z Flip 5 points to 8GB of RAM, a choice between 256GB or 512GB of storage, and a 3,700mAh battery.
Not forgetting its photographic capabilities, the Z Flip 5 could be sporting a 12MP primary lens and a 12MP ultrawide lens on its cover display. In comparison, the Z Fold 5 is whispered to feature 12GB of RAM, similar storage options, and a camera setup that includes a 50MP main sensor and a 12MP ultrawide camera.
Galaxy Watch 6 Classic
As part of the tech bonanza at Galaxy Unpacked July 2023, the anticipated Galaxy Watch 6 might surprise us with a nostalgic nod to a beloved feature – the bezel. According to leaked images from WinFuture, the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic could potentially revive the rotating bezel, a component that Samsung opted out of for the Galaxy Watch 5 series. But fret not bezel-free lovers, it appears Samsung has you covered as well, with the standard Galaxy Watch 6 model rumored to keep the bezel-less design.
The classic and the standard versions differ not only in design but also in size. The standard Galaxy Watch 6 is speculated to come in 40mm and 44mm sizes, while the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic might upsize the game with options of 43mm and 47mm, potentially making it Samsung’s most substantial watch to date. And while curved displays were part of the rumor mill, the leaked images tell a different tale.
A speculative spec sheet from SnoopyTech lays out more details for both the Galaxy Watch 6 and the Classic variant. Both could be graced with sapphire crystal displays, with the smaller 40mm and 43mm models featuring a 1.31-inch OLED with 432 x 432 resolution. For those favoring larger models, the 44mm and 47mm variants of the Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic might boast 1.47-inch OLED displays with a 480 x 480 resolution.
Along with the display upgrades, the Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic are rumored to be powered by the much-anticipated Exynos W930 chip, partnered with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The devices could also come with a host of health and fitness features including an IP68 water rating, a heart rate monitor, a blood oxygen sensor, and a temperature gauge.
The software isn’t lagging behind either, with the Galaxy Watch 6 likely to launch with Samsung’s revamped One UI 5 Watch system. This brings in an array of upgrades such as improved sleep tracking features, emergency SOS, and personalized heart rate zones. As for aesthetics, the Galaxy Watch 6 might offer choices of gray, gold, and silver, while the Classic is speculated to be available in sleek black and silver.
Galaxy Tab S9
As we near the Galaxy Unpacked July 2023, it’s prime time for an upgrade to the Galaxy Tab line, with the S8 having made its debut last April. Although the grapevine has been rather quiet about the S9 series, some whispers have emerged, primarily from Netherlands-based Galaxy Club.
In a repeat of the Tab S8 lineup, we anticipate a trio of models for the Tab S9 series – the Galaxy Tab S9, the Tab S9 Plus, and the Tab S9 Ultra. All three tablets are expected to boast the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, along with an IP67 rating for water resistance.
There are also hints of Samsung’s OLED screen making an appearance on the base model in the S9 lineup, a feature the standard Tab S8 missed out on last year. Galaxy Club reports suggest that the entry-level Tab S9 could be stepping up its game with a beefier battery compared to its S8 predecessor.
There could be a tradeoff for these upgrades, with the base model potentially sporting a single camera setup instead of the dual cameras seen on the Tab S8. Leaked images from WinFuture seem to corroborate this. As for the S9 Plus and S9 Ultra, no substantial changes are expected, making them consistent players in Samsung’s tablet lineup for the Galaxy Unpacked July 2023.
What more to expect?
Since this is Samsung’s last Unpacked event for the year, we might not see too many upgrades in the coming months. What we can expect, though, are some updates to Samsung’s Android- and Wear OS-based operating systems, including the launch of One UI 6 and One UI 5 Watch.
