Fans of emojis, rejoice! Your devices will soon receive a fresh crop of expressive symbols thanks to the upcoming release of the new iOS 17 emojis.
World Emoji Day is approaching, therefore, Emojipedia has prepared a possible preview of what’s to come in the wacky emoji world. Emoji 15.1 offers a change in approach for more than 100 existing emoji characters and is most likely to be released for Apple devices in the spring of 2024.
108 draft characters that currently face left but may eventually be able to face right are highlighted by Emojipedia. New combinations of bust-shaped emoji characters and gender-neutral representations of families are some more choices. A draft of Emoji 15.1 is available right now.
In September, the definitive list of new emoji characters and modifications will be published, according to Emojipedia.
What are the new iOS 17 emojis?
Along with a number of new direction-based human emojis, draft emoji candidates up for approval by Unicode in September include a lime, a head shaking vertically, and a phoenix bird. Emojipedia has prepared sample designs for the new potential emojis in advance of World Emoji Day 2023. You can see them above.
Along with the Lime and a Head Shaking Vertically and Phoenix Bird, the Emoji 15.1 draft list also includes four new gender-neutral family emojis that are meant to be represented by silhouettes similar to the existing “Bust in Silhouette” and “Busts in Silhouette” emojis.
Each of these draft emoji options is to be built using zero-width joiner (ZWJ) sequences, using pre-existing emojis to build a new design and concept, similar to the suggestions from 2019’s Emoji 12.1 and 2020’s Emoji 13.1.
Phoenix Bird, for instance, will have shown as the “Bird and the Fire.” emojis put next to one another, whereas the lime will appear as a green square following the lemon. The new family emojis, which have been available in non-silhouette form for many years on Microsoft devices, are the only exceptions to this rule.
The following are the most plausible candidates surrounding Emoji 15.1:
- phoenix bird
- brown mushroom
- broken chain
- lime
- head shaking vertically
- head shaking horizontally
While Unicode intends for these new family emojis to be added to our emoji keyboards in a manner reminiscent of the current “Bust in Silhouette” and “Busts in Silhouette” emojis, the decision to follow this design directive ultimately rests with each emoji vendor (Apple, Google, Samsung, etc.).
The Emoji 15.1 candidate list includes directional variations of six additional person emoji types in addition to the ten emoji concepts mentioned above (for a total of 108 new emojis when you include skin tone modifier and gender variants).
