In response to the growing dissatisfaction among Twitter users, Meta has been diligently working on developing a Twitter alternative app for the past few months. Tentatively named “Meta Threads,” this app is set to function as an extension of Instagram, allowing users to log in using their Instagram credentials.
With a focus on enhanced privacy features and a familiar interface, Barcelona aims to provide a refreshing social media experience.
Why is Meta Threads being developed?
The decision to create a Twitter alternative app comes after Elon Musk’s changes to Twitter caused unrest among its users. Meta recognized this as an opportunity to introduce a fresh alternative to the market.
The app, Meta Threads, draws inspiration from Instagram and allows users to share text updates of up to 500 characters, along with the ability to add links, photos, and videos. Additionally, the app places a strong emphasis on private messaging, enabling users to create groups and exchange direct messages.
Meta Threads have been accidentally added to Play Store before
On July 1, 2023, Barcelona made a brief appearance in the Google Play Store in certain regions. However, it was swiftly removed, indicating that the official launch is still pending. Meta’s explanation on this Twitter alternative app is as follows:
”Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things – or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world”.

Screenshots of the app’s interface have been shared by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, revealing a design that closely resembles Twitter. The app is expected to be officially released in mid-July 2023.

Meta envisions its Twitter alternative app as a means to harness the unrest among dissatisfied Twitter users and attract a substantial number of new users. Furthermore, Barcelona can be seen as a strategic move by Meta to compete directly with Twitter in the real-time update space.
Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the app will achieve the desired success, as Twitter holds a well-established position with a large user base.
