The Mandalorians are a culture of warriors who have a long and rich history in the Star Wars galaxy. Mandalorian clans are known for their distinctive armor, their code of honor, and their fierce loyalty to their clans. But who are these clans, and how do they relate to each other?
In this blog post, we will explore the different Mandalorian clans, houses, and groups that have appeared in the Star Wars canon and learn more about their origins, beliefs, and roles.
A Mandalorian clan is a family unit that forms the basic social structure of Mandalorian society. Each clan is organized under a particular house or political faction that shares a common ancestor or ideology. For example, members of Clan Wren are allied with House Vizsla, one of the oldest and most influential houses in Mandalorian history.
Clans can also form alliances with other clans or groups based on mutual interests or goals.

Explained: Mandalorian clans list
There is no definitive answer to how many Mandalorian clans exist, as new clans can emerge or old ones can disappear over time. However, based on the available sources, we can identify at least 12 Mandalorian clans, houses, and groups that have played a significant role in the Star Wars canon. Here is a brief overview of each one:
- Death Watch: The Mandalorian Death Watch was the first Mandalorian group to be shown in Star Wars canon. They were a group of terrorists who showed up in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. They didn’t agree with Duchess Satine Kryze’s policy of peace, so they were sent to the Mandalorian moon of Concordia. There, they started making plans to take over Mandalore. Before they were betrayed, they worked with Count Dooku and the separatists. Later, they worked with Maul and the Shadow Collective to get rid of Duchess Satine. Even though they were successful, Death Watch eventually split into two groups, which started a new civil war on Mandalore.
- Clan Mudhorn: Clan Mudhorn is the newest and smallest Mandalorian group. It is made up of Din Djarin and Grogu. After Grogu saved Din from a Mudhorn, the Armorer put this symbol on his armor and said that they were now a clan of two. Even when they were apart for a while, Din always thought of Grogu as a Mandalorian orphan, and Grogu eventually quit his Jedi training to go back with Din. Din has taught Grogu the ways of the Mandalorians as the two have continued their adventures together. Grogu won’t be able to swear the creed or get his own Mandalorian armor until time passes.
- Children of the Watch: A splinter group of Death Watch that separated from Maul’s followers after his takeover. They adhered to a strict creed that forbade them from removing their helmets in front of others or revealing their true identity. They also rescued and adopted foundlings from various worlds and raised them as Mandalorians. One of their members was Din Djarin, also known as the Mandalorian or Mando, who became the caretaker of Grogu, a Force-sensitive child of Yoda’s species.
- New Mandalorians: A political movement that advocated for peace and neutrality in the galaxy. They were led by Duchess Satine Kryze of House Kryze, who ruled over Mandalore and its moon Concordia during the Clone Wars. They rejected the violent ways of their ancestors and embraced a more progressive and democratic society. They were supported by the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic, but faced opposition from Death Watch and other factions.
- House Vizsla: One of the oldest and most prominent houses in Mandalorian history. It was founded by Tor Vizsla, who created the Darksaber, a unique black-bladed lightsaber that became a symbol of leadership for the Mandalorians. House Vizsla was known for its ambition and aggression, often clashing with other houses and groups. It was divided into several clans over time, such as Clan Vizsla (led by Pre Vizsla), Clan Wren (led by Ursa Wren), and Clan Saxon (led by Gar Saxon).
- House Kryze: A noble house that ruled over Mandalore during the Clone Wars. It was led by Duchess Satine Kryze, who was also the leader of the New Mandalorians. House Kryze was known for its pacifism and diplomacy but also had a strong sense of honor and justice. It was allied with House Wren and House Vizsla before their betrayal. It was also related to Bo-Katan Kryze, Satine’s sister and former member of Death Watch.
- House Kast: In the first episode of Star Wars Rebels’ fourth season, House Kast was one of the Mandalorian groups that swore allegiance to Bo-Katan Kryze. Clan Rook was part of this house, and two Mandalorians, Rook Kast, and Veraslayn Kast, seem to be members, but this has not been officially confirmed.
- Clan Wren: Clan Wren was the most well-known Mandalorian group in Star Wars Rebels, thanks to Sabine Wren. Sabine is a member of the Ghost crew. At first, not much was known about her Mandalorian past, but as time went on, more details came to light. Her family joined the Empire, which made Sabine leave and put Clan Wren in a dangerous position for a long time. But Sabine got her family to fight back against the Empire, and she later did the same with the other Mandalorian clans. This made Bo-Katan Kryze go back to Mandalore, where he took the Darksaber and agreed to rule again.
- Clan Saxon: This clan is known for its ruthless tactics and its willingness to use violence to achieve its goals. Many members of this clan have served as mercenaries or bounty hunters, and they are feared throughout the galaxy for their combat skills.
- Clan Eldar: Clan Eldar was another Mandalorian clan that swore to support Bo-Katan and joined the Mandalorian resistance against the Empire. Their armor was a mix of black, dark green, and orange, with the symbol of a leonid creature. After the Great Purge of Mandalore, some members later joined the Children of the Watch.
- Clan Awaud: During the Clone Wars, Clan Awaud split into two groups. One of the groups joined the Old Mandalorians and settled in Vlemoth Port. The Old Mandalorians didn’t want to get back at Duchess Satine and the New Mandalorians like the Mandalorian Death Watch did, even though they were also kicked out of Mandalore. Chieftain Nam Beroya was in charge of Clan Awaud until his death when his adopted daughter Vera Beroya took over. In the end, they joined forces with Rebel Alliance supporters to fight against the Empire at the Battle of Xorrn.
