With the release of Diablo 4 Beta last week, an interesting but scary claim has been made, claiming that there is an issue of Diablo 4 killing 3080 Ti and other graphic cards.
The Diablo IV Beta Early Access launched this weekend, and despite the problems, malfunctions, and the fact that it’s not the whole game, it seems like players can’t get enough of it and can’t wait for it to go on sale. However, the game delivered more than just bugs to the limited few who played it on a PC with an NVIDIA GPU; it completely bricked their graphics card.
How is Diablo 4 killing 3080 Ti and similar GPUs?
It all started with a Reddit debate about Diablo 4. They had just been playing the beta for about 20 minutes, according to the threadstarter (TS) of the post, mkp0203, when their monitor just abruptly shut off. Their motherboard started showing error code 97 after restarting their computer, indicating that his graphics card, a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Vision, was beyond repair.
This doesn’t seem to be a one-off incidence either; several players who participated in the PC beta of Diablo IV early reported having a similar experience on the official Blizzard forums. Some claimed to have encountered the same display cutoff, while others said that their graphics cards’ fans would suddenly ramp up to full speed. Only by restarting their system did everything return to normal, according to the latter group. Some people who encountered the latter might have their GPUs “brick” as a result.
These stories also follow a few common trends. First off, all of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series cards, and more especially the RTX 3080 Ti, were bricked by the Diablo IV beta. Second, it looks that “uncapped” framerates may be one of the causes of the demise of pricey hardware, based on a number of complaints in the forums.
If this sounds disturbingly familiar, it’s because in 2021, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs—specifically, versions built by EVGA and Gigabyte—were bricking Amazon’s MMORPG, New World. When these cards were about to brick, they would ramp up quickly, their screens would become black, and then their system would suddenly shut down. This is identical to what Diablo IV is currently doing.
It is unknown at this moment whether NVIDIA’s more expensive GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics cards and the Diablo IV Beta have been brought to Blizzard’s attention. The game is still in beta, so there is a good chance that this problem will be resolved before the game’s formal debut in June. However, until then, it seems like a rather good idea to play Diablo 4 with a little caution and keep an eye on your computer’s heating levels, especially that of your GPU.
As we said, since more than several players have reported that they experienced the same issue, Blizzard is expected to come up with a solution soon. If you want to lay off Diablo 4 until then, check out our articles below to see if we can excite you into a new game.
