The most recent rumors about Elon Musk Texas town called Snailbrook have had many by the surprise. the CEO of Tesla, Twitter, SpaceX, and the Boring Company, is now adding the town owner to his list of accomplishments. According to rumors, the multi-billionaire is constructing his own “utopia” in Texas, which he intends to call Snailbrook.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk intends to establish the town outside of Austin next to his Boring and SpaceX facilities, all of which are now under construction. A number of modular homes, a pool, an outdoor sports area, a gym, and signage that read “Welcome, snailbrook, tx, est. 2021” were shown in Facebook images of the region.

Governed by Elon Musk Texas town Snailbrook might not be the best idea

The Journal reports that Musk’s plans call for constructing housing for his staff and charging them about $800 per month for one- and two-bedroom residences, with the condition that they would have 30 days to leave the property if they were fired or quit their jobs. Even if the ideas are still being developed, it seems like a good time to consider whether they even make sense.

Corporations have been buying up towns for decades in order to establish a monopoly of power in a specific area and profit from their workforce. In theory, the concept is sound: in exchange for working for a company, you are given a discounted rate on housing in the town with access to all the services. But what transpires when things go wrong?

Company towns have a long history of producing so-called utopian communities for their inhabitants, but they have also produced communities that resembled prison camps, where employers serve as the landlord, the shopkeeper, and any other necessary service. Coal firms constructed numerous communities, and the people there frequently endured exploitation.

The bulk of business towns was developed using the labor and skill of the workforce without paying them fairly or providing for minimum standards of living. The Smithsonian claims that when the coal, steel, and textile industries were booming in the early 19th century, businesses built the towns so that their employees had to live in simple housing and send their children to business-owned schools where they were only taught from the viewpoint of the boss.

The workers were paid with scrip rather than cash and weren’t adequately compensated. The company store frequently substantially hiked its pricing by around 20% more than other establishments outside the compound because workers could only use scrip there.

Although it is believed that these town models existed in the past, they still exist nowadays. The idea of Elon Musk governing his own town Snailbrook is somehow worrisome as he has proven to be a right-wing taskmaster who purportedly fires workers on a whim, despises safety rules, encourages discriminatory workplaces, and overall appears to believe the law doesn’t apply to him. Of course, people have different ideas about the multi-billionaire, but Musk has really proved himself to be worthy of controversy nonetheless.
