According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk intends to establish the town outside of Austin next to his Boring and SpaceX facilities, all of which are now under construction. A number of modular homes, a pool, an outdoor sports area, a gym, and signage that read “Welcome, snailbrook, tx, est. 2021” were shown in Facebook images of the region.

Corporations have been buying up towns for decades in order to establish a monopoly of power in a specific area and profit from their workforce. In theory, the concept is sound: in exchange for working for a company, you are given a discounted rate on housing in the town with access to all the services. But what transpires when things go wrong?
Company towns have a long history of producing so-called utopian communities for their inhabitants, but they have also produced communities that resembled prison camps, where employers serve as the landlord, the shopkeeper, and any other necessary service.
