To enhance individuals’ ability to uncover new possibilities, experience the thrill of creation, and effectively utilize the vast amount of knowledge available, the company is currently enhancing the ways in which the world can gain advantage from the web by reimagining the tools that billions of people utilize daily, the search engine and the browser.
AI powered Bing search is finally unveiled
Today, the company has introduced a completely new, AI powered Bing search engine and Edge browser, which are now accessible for preview at Bing.com. These tools aim to provide more effective search results, more comprehensive answers, a fresh chat experience, and the capability to generate content. The company considers these tools as an AI-powered companion for navigating the web.
“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search. Today, we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web,” stated Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft.
An estimated 10 billion search queries are made daily, however, it is believed that approximately half of these go unanswered. This is due to the fact that individuals are utilizing search engines for purposes beyond their original design. Although search engines are efficient in locating websites, they often fail to deliver satisfactory results for more complex questions or tasks.
Exploring the Bing chatbot integration
The company has integrated search, browsing, and chat into a seamless experience that can be accessed from any part of the web, offering:
Better search. The AI powered Bing offers an improved version of the conventional search experience, delivering more relevant results for basic queries such as sports scores, stock prices, and weather conditions. Additionally, it features a new sidebar that provides more comprehensive answers, available at the user’s discretion.
Complete answers. The AI powered Bing thoroughly examines results from across the web to identify and summarize the sought-after answer. For instance, you can obtain detailed instructions for replacing eggs with another ingredient in a cake you are making, without having to sift through multiple search results.
A new chat experience. For more complicated searches, such as planning a comprehensive travel itinerary or investigating the best TV to purchase, the AI powered Bing provides an interactive chat experience. This chat feature allows users to refine their search by requesting additional information, clarification, and suggestions. Quick links are available, enabling users to promptly take action on their decisions.
A creative spark. At times, more than just an answer is required – inspiration is also necessary. The new Bing can create content to help in these situations. It can assist in composing an email, developing a five-day itinerary for a Hawaiian vacation complete with links for booking travel and accommodations, preparing for a job interview, or creating a trivia quiz for game night. The AI powered Bing also cites all its sources, enabling users to access the web content referenced.
New Microsoft Edge experience. Microsoft has updated the Edge browser with advanced AI features and a refreshed appearance, and introduced two new capabilities: Chat and Compose. By utilizing the Edge Sidebar, an individual can request a summary of a comprehensive financial report to gain key insights, then utilize the chat function to compare it to another company’s financials and display the results in a tabulated format.
You can also ask Edge to help you compose content, such as a LinkedIn post, by giving it a few prompts to get you started. After that, you can ask it to help you update the tone, format and length of the post. Edge can understand the web page you’re on and adapts accordingly.
Microsoft shared an example search in its blog post:
With the new Bing, exploring the web isn’t just easier, it’s also more fun. Ask it things like:
My anniversary is coming up in September, help me plan a trip somewhere fun in Europe, leaving from London.
Will the Ikea Klippan loveseat fit into my 2019 Honda Odyssey?
I like electronic music and want to go to my first festival this year. Do you have any recommendations or tips for me?
The AI powered Bing experience is the result of four significant technical advancements:
- Next-generation OpenAI model. The new AI powered Bing operates on a next-generation OpenAI large language model that is designed specifically for search and is more powerful than ChatGPT. It incorporates key insights and advancements from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 and is faster, more accurate, and more capable.
- Microsoft Prometheus model. A proprietary approach has been developed to effectively utilize the power of OpenAI, known as the Prometheus model. This integration of capabilities and techniques results in improved relevance, timeliness, and specificity of results, as well as heightened safety.
- Applying AI to core search algorithm. The AI model has also been incorporated into the core Bing search ranking engine, resulting in the largest improvement in relevance in two decades. With this AI integration, even basic search queries are now more precise and relevant.
- New user experience. The way in which individuals interact with search, browsing, and chat is being redefined by integrating them into a seamless experience. This paves the way for a revolutionary new approach to engaging with the web.
These groundbreaking new search experiences are possible because Microsoft has committed to building Azure into an AI supercomputer for the world, and OpenAI has used this infrastructure to train the breakthrough models that are now being optimized for Bing.
