Blizzard’s promised PvE mode is still not there, fans are asking: When is the Overwatch 2 campaign release date? The release date of Overwatch 2 campaign mode (PvE) deviates from the traditional full-priced model of its predecessor, opting instead for a free-to-play Battle Pass system.
While the multiplayer PvP mode has already been made available with crossplay capabilities, the highly-anticipated PvE mode featuring co-op missions that expand on the game’s story, has not yet been released. To learn more about the details of the first story mode in Overwatch 2 and when it can be expected, keep reading.
When is the Overwatch 2 campaign release date?
In the original Overwatch, PvE game modes were only available during limited events and the story was primarily told through animated shorts. However, Overwatch 2 introduces a permanent PvE mode that includes an in-game full story campaign that delves into the Overwatch world and lore more deeply. Players will be able to team up with other players to fight against AI enemies and after completing the campaign, replayable endgame content in the form of Hero Missions will be available.
The new PvE campaign mode for Overwatch 2 was a major feature when the game was first announced. However, the mode was not released at the same time as the game, but was delayed to be released as an update later. Despite the delay, the company still believes it was the correct decision. In an interview with NME, the game director of Overwatch 2, Aaron Keller, stated that although it was a difficult decision, it was necessary.
“We found ourselves in a position where we couldn’t release all of the content that we were building for Overwatch 2 until the campaign was finished,” he stated.
The co-op effort will launch later this year, according to Keller. He states that the corporation is “still finalising” the specifics of how it will be delivered.
“We couldn’t release all of the content that we were building for Overwatch 2 until the campaign was finished. We found ourselves saying ‘we’re going to keep withholding content from our players so we can release everything together with our original strategy – the campaign – or we’re going to have to change the way that we think about releasing the game,” Keller said.
It appears that the release of the PvE mode for Overwatch 2 will not be all at once. The campaign will be released in sections, as indicated by the game’s roadmap from October, which stated that PvE will start in 2023. It raises the question if the mode will continue to be expanded throughout the lifetime of Overwatch 2 as Blizzard is working on its roll out.
The PvE mode in Overwatch 2 will let players to take on the roles of several characters from the whole cast, each of whom has a unique ability tree and unlockable exclusive upgrades. Take a look at the gameplay trailer to get a feel for the story mode:
