If you are wondering about the meaning of What is that melody Overwatch, look no further. As we are going to be diving into the lore of Sigma and explaining everything that you need to know.
What is that melody Overwatch meaning
So, what is the meaning of What is that melody Overwatch? This phrase is said whenever Sigma casts his ultimate ability in a match, accompanied by a semi-chaotic piano melody. The reason Sigma says this is directly connected to his lore and backstory, so we have to go over that to understand it.
Sigma’s lore in Overwatch
An orbital experiment gone awry gave Sigma, a volatile and eccentric astrophysicist, the ability to manipulate gravity. Sigma’s presence on the battlefield cannot be disregarded because she has been controlled by Talon and used as a live weapon.
After his experiment going wrong, Sigma lost his mind due to what he witnessed in the accident that gave him gravitational abilities. After that, he became a prisoner of his own mind and was not able to regain his mental stability. His personality split into different fragments and he started hearing the “music of the universe.”
Why does Sigma say “What is that melody?”
While casting your ultimate ability as Sigma, the music that you hear is what Sigma hears in his mind and he is unable to grasp what he is hearing. Therefore he asks himself “What is that melody?”
Interesting fan theory about parallels to Tracer
Some of the fans noticed that Tracer’s Recall ability has a song that is hidden inside it. When reversed and slowed down, the sound effect of Tracer becomes a song, albeit a song that Blizzard created, not a popular hit. Some fans have theorized that the experiment gone wrong that involved Tracer is similar to what happened to Sigma. While Tracer’s accident gave her powers relating to time, Sigma’s gave him powers relating to gravity.
Fans say that both are hearing these melodies because of the experiments that have gone wrong, but unlike Sigma, Tracer got proper help from her friends making her able to keep her sanity.
Sigma abilities
Hyperspheres: Sigma fires two gravitic charges, which bounce off of obstacles before imploding briefly and inflicting damage on foes in a wide area.
Experimental Barrier: A floating barrier is moved to the desired area by Sigma. He is always able to get the barrier back.
Kinetic Grasp: Incoming projectiles are turned into overhealth when Sigma freezes them in midair.
Accretion: Sigma grabs a pile of trash and throws it at an adversary to take them out.
Gravitic Flux: Sigma takes flight as he uses all of his abilities to lift foes in a specific region, send them into the air, and bring them back down.
One of the few who performs music especially is Sigma. Presumably, the “melody” he hears and muses over is the piano music that is playing. His behavior during the highlight suggests that he has learned, or is at the very least quite familiar with, this specific music.
If you pay close attention, you can hear similar piano music playing as he releases his ultimate in addition to this. Unlike his highlight, the music is wild and harsh and follows no melody. If you listen closely enough, you can also hear his echoing, manic laughing.
