Snapchat settlement details

Plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit alleging that Snap Inc. (the “Defendant”) violated Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act, 740 ILCS 14/1, et seq. (“BIPA”), based on allegations that Defendant unlawfully collected and stored biometric identifiers and/or biometric information (collectively, “biometric data”) using Snap’s “Lenses” and “Filters” features. The following people are impacted by the Settlement in this case: All residents of Illinois who utilized Snap’s Lenses or Filters between November 17, 2015 and the present (“Class Period”).

In the event that the Settlement is approved, $35,000,000 would be available to cover all settlement payments to class members, the service award to class representatives, the fee award, administrative costs, any applicable federal, state, and/or local taxes (including any interest or penalties thereon), and any and all other fees, costs, or expenses.

In a class action lawsuit settlement last year, a court ordered Meta to pay $650 million. The case claimed that Facebook’s picture tagging monitored people’s facial traits without their knowledge.
