Several rumors circulated yesterday that a ban on TikTok will be declared on October 24, 2022, during the Attorney General’s press conference, but did this happen? For a long time, there have been rumors that TikTok might be outlawed in the United States, and people have been reacting to this. While some feel it is excellent news, others are not so sure, but what is going on?
Is TikTok banned in US?
No, TikTok will not be banned in the United States in 2022. The speculations originated when it was reported that US Attorney General Merrick Garland will conduct a news conference to discuss a “significant national security case.” Many assumed it was tied to TikTok because there had been concerns that the app was a security risk back in July 2022.
What really happened?
During the news conference, the Justice Department revealed that 13 people had been charged with attempting to “unlawfully exert influence in the United States.” Attorney General Garland cited three distinct cases involving these alleged scams in his presentation. According to the first accusation, seven Chinese nationals attempted to repatriate a Chinese person. In the second instance, four more people were accused of attempting to target people in the United States to act on China’s behalf.
Finally, two more persons were charged with “interfering in a U.S. criminal prosecution of a global telecommunications company.” TikTok was not mentioned once during the conference.
