Gotham Knights story spoilers: Ending explained
Following Batman’s death at the hands of Ra’s al Ghul, the Bat Family has worked relentlessly to unearth the enigmatic Court of Owls. The Court has evaded Batman’s investigation for generations, despite having a hand in organizing horrible atrocities. Talia al Ghul comes to Gotham as part of their inquiry, initially forming an alliance with the squad. Naturally, her motives are called into doubt. Other villains, like Harley Quinn and Mr. Freeze, must be dealt with, although their intentions are reserved for their individual task chains.
Our heroes hunt Gotham’s criminal underground for their boss, but the outcome is bittersweet. The Court’s activities were orchestrated by Jacob Kane, a former USSOCOM soldier, and CEO of Kane Industries. Through their employment with Wayne Industries, Kane became a friend to Bruce. The team’s attempt to thwart Kane’s goals was nothing more than a set-up, as Talia utilizes their efforts to attack the Court’s weakness. Talia has been doing tests using Lazarus Pit water extracts in order to boost the League’s warriors. However, an army needs an imposing General to command it.
The heroes follow Talia’s movements to the depths beneath Gotham’s dam shortly after investigating her research lab amid the ruins of Arkham Asylum. As we discover, the league has been excavating indefinitely, and the fallen Batcave has now become their headquarters of operations. Vast tunnels continue to descend down, eventually leading to a sealed-off cavern where Talia has built many Lazarus Pits.
The bat’s shadow stays. Talia recovered Bruce’s body and deposited it in the pit. At the expense of resurrection, his mentality has been perverted. The player must now utilize all of their skills to beat their old mentor. For a brief emotional moment, Bruce regains consciousness, but Batman’s final hurrah is cut short when Talia stabs him through the spine. Talia dares the player to an extremely difficult duel to death as he slides out of sight.
When you seize control, the Court emerges from the shadows with a new, nameless leader. With Talia presumably beaten, the Court of Owls is ready to assume control of the Lazarus Pits. Talia pledges to purify Gotham at any cost. The rumblings of the Bat-Wing are suddenly heard as Bruce utilizes his final ounce of power to annihilate Talia’s men. Talia vanishes into the mist. After thwarting a substantial portion of her troops, the player sends a message to the citizens of Gotham. The Court of Owls and a splintered League remain at large, assuring them that they would go to any length to defend Batman’s legacy. For the time being.
