Spirits Unleashed is developed by IllFonic, the same team that created the asymmetrical multiplayer games Predator: Hunting Grounds and Friday the 13th. Up to four players can take on the role of Ghostbusters, while another player (or an AI) haunts one of the game’s five locales as a spook, specter, or ghost. The ‘busters employ traditional ghostbusting equipment to track down and capture the ghost, but the ghost may do things like hiding in everyday items, unleash weak but irritating minion ghosts, and, of course, slime humans. The ghost wins if it terrifies enough folks and generally causes enough mayhem to fill up a “haunt” meter. Before that happens, the Ghostbusters want to catch it.
So, first and foremost, the good news. Spirits Unleashed made an excellent first impression on us by immediately transporting us to the gang’s famous firehouse, which has been lovingly reproduced and is fully explorable. It also puts Winston Zeddemore (voiced by actor Ernie Hudson, who played him in the films) in the spotlight, taking up just where Ghostbusters: Afterlife left off, with Winston reopening the old New York headquarters. Having Winston heavily featured here feels like a return to form for some of the early Ghostbusters games, which we enjoyed.
Regarding the bots’ intelligence, it should be noted that, while not flawless, they are far superior to what we saw in some of llfonic’s past titles, like Friday the 13th. We can also confirm that Illfonic will be improving this with future updates and patches.
Bot AI may experience some progress in the weeks and months following its release, and if so, it will be very welcome. Even if it does, there’s no disputing that Spirits Unleashed is basically intended as a multiplayer game that fosters dialogue. So, if you’re considering of playing it, make a list of people you know you’d want to play it with.
Keep your expectations in check as well. This is a simple game. It’s a low-key, casual multiplayer game that could be pleasant for the whole family but won’t blow your socks off for $40. Sure, there’s a plot that advances as you play matches and collect XP, enabling upgrades for your gear and new aesthetic options for your ‘buster, including some charming homages to the wonderful cartoon series The Real Ghostbusters, but after a few rounds, you pretty much understand the whole thing.
