Today we explain Overwatch 2 Defense Matrix: SMS protect and phone number requirement… As part of its Defense Matrix project, which aims to streamline and improve the player experience, Blizzard described the most recent modifications coming to Overwatch 2. However, some surprising changes are also being made to how the game is accessed.
Overwatch 2 Defense Matrix: SMS protect and phone number requirement
The Defense Matrix endeavor is covered in-depth on the blog by Blizzard, who also describes the numerous new technologies created to reduce cheating, “smurfing,” and harassment/toxicity. Smurfing is the practice of making a new account to destroy newer players and advance through the levels more quickly after investing a lot of time and skill into the game.
The first and most important component of the program is “SMS Protect,” which makes it necessary for all players to link their Overwatch 2 accounts to valid phone numbers in order to play. This means that prepaid and VOIP lines are not included. Thus, you can’t play the game if you don’t have a real phone number. All gamers, experienced and novices alike, must use SMS Protect.
Blizzard then describes the addition of audio transcription features to help prevent toxicity and harassment in games. The technology captures a brief voice chat from a reported player and converts it to text using speech-to-text software. The text file is removed 30 days after the audio recording, which is deleted shortly after. The gamer will receive punishment if the system finds offensive language or poisonous behavior.
Blizzard is also implementing a First Time User Experience, or FTUE, for new players who register accounts after launch so they won’t be overrun with a ton of heroes to learn about. The majority of heroes are hidden from the user by this technique, which releases them gradually over the course of 100 matches. Players can join a group to unlock all heroes, save for Battle Pass-locked, if they want to get rid of the restrictions.
Players must win 50 Quick Play matches before they may enter Competitive modes. “This gives new players time to prepare for the higher expectations that come with Competitive, while long-term players don’t feel discouraged by teammates who have less experience. In the process of unlocking Competitive, we analyze new player skill levels to optimize matchmaking in a way that feels good to everyone,” the blog reads.
