Outpainting, a fresh feature, has been added to DALL-E 2’s feature list. Outpainting modifies portions of an existing image while maintaining its style, similar to inpainting, a well-established element of several image creation models.
This feature expands beyond the original image’s boundaries, endlessly extrapolating data to create a full scene from the source, whereas inpainting edits inside the confines of the source image. The new tool allows source photos to be expanded to any final image size.
Since the system’s preview version was unveiled months ago, more than 3,000 artists from more than 118 countries have tested it. Playwrights, screenwriters, landscape designers, tattoo artists, costume designers, and even augmented reality makers are included in this group of creatives (AR).
DALL-E 2 allows users to work quickly and easily, which inspires artists and creative professionals and enhances their creative processes. Magazine covers, music videos for children with cancer, and the execution of creative concepts have all been produced using DALL-E 2.
Before launching DALLE 2 in beta, the OpenAI team conducted research and worked with scientists, artists, engineers, and other users to understand the risks. The team has taken a number of actions as a result of their discussions.
To prevent the tool from being used to spread false information, its system prohibits image submissions with realistic faces and tries to impersonate well-known people and powerful figures. Modern techniques were also used to avoid creating real people’s faces in a realistic manner.
DALL-E 2 introduces outpainting
In the Twitter thread for the feature announcement, OpenAI has been showcasing artists who are effectively utilizing the new feature. Be sure to skim through everything here if you want to see what the new tool is capable of.

“Today we’re introducing Outpainting, a new feature which helps users extend their creativity by continuing an image beyond its original borders — adding visual elements in the same style, or taking a story in new directions — simply by using a natural language description,”

What is outpainting?
Changes within an uploaded or created image are already possible using DALL-E 2’s Edit feature thanks to a technology known as “Inpainting.” Users can now expand the source image and produce large-scale images in any aspect ratio thanks to outpainting. To preserve the context of the original image, this tool considers the image’s existing visual components, such as shadows, reflections, and textures.
Today, more than a million individuals use DALL-E 2, an AI system that creates unique visuals and artwork from a description in natural language. With the new Outpainting tool, artists have already produced impressive images and, in the process, helped us better understand its capabilities.
Conclusion
DALL-E 2 is a capable, powerful tool for creation. The samples we’ve seen are great and amazing, but it’s possible that OpenAI staff members played a major role in choosing them. Given the numerous issues they disclosed in the system card paper, we don’t think they have bad intentions. Even yet, if they won’t allow objective researchers to assess DALL-E 2’s outputs, we should at the very least proceed with caution.
There is a stance we prefer to take when thinking about and analyzing models like the DALL-E 2. It’s quite easy to cease using critical thinking and just accept DALL-E 2’s breathtaking results. That is precisely what allows companies like OpenAI to operate unrestrictedly in an industry that lacks accountability and is all too common.
The necessity of creating DALL-E 2 is still another issue. We might ultimately experience a net negative because it appears they wouldn’t be willing to suspend deployment whether the risks can be successfully managed or not (the tone from the system card document is clear: they don’t know how to address most potential problems).
That argument has a lot to say, so we will go into more detail about it in a later article. DALL-E 2 has implications that go beyond AI. Future events will be altered by DALL-E 2, for better or worse.
