  • You have more freedom and control over how and where you appear with the new Meta account structure.
  • People can still register a Meta account using their Facebook and Instagram IDs, claims the company.
  • To even begin creating a Meta account, one must have the most latest version of the Oculus program and VR headset software.
  • In addition to the Meta account, the previous Oculus account will be replaced by a “Meta Horizon Profile”.

Meta Horizon profiles and Meta accounts are launched. If you don’t have the opportunity to establish a Meta account and a Meta Horizon profile right away, you’ll get the update soon because it will be released internationally on a gradual basis. With the new Meta account structure, you have greater freedom and control over how and where you appear. You may also decide whether Facebook and/or Instagram will be a part of your VR experience and other places where you use your Meta Horizon profile.

With effect from today, Meta has reversed one of its most divisive decisions that affected its VR users. Prior to this change, all new Quest users were obliged to sign up with an active Facebook account, while legacy Oculus account holders were compelled to link to Facebook by the year 2023.

Both new and experienced Meta VR device users must create a Meta account in order to log in and access the metaverse. After complaints about privacy concerns developed around utilizing personal social network accounts, the corporation is abandoning the outdated method of logging on.

According to the business, people can still create a Meta account using their Facebook and Instagram identities. The Accounts Center, the focal point for interconnected experiences across Meta, will connect users who choose to create their Meta accounts through their social media accounts.

While the company encourages users to connect using a Meta account, individuals who are already utilizing an Oculus login can continue to do so until January 1, 2023.

The company promises that it will “still have access to all of your previous VR purchases and downloads” once customers switch over.

Although linking social network accounts managed by Meta is not required, the firm is nonetheless offering it as a choice. According to the company, the new ID system will enable better metaverse experiences, like livestream sharing, chatting, and discovering followers more quickly.

One needs to have the most recent software for the Oculus app and VR headset in order to even start the creation of a Meta account.

The previous Oculus account will be replaced by a “Meta Horizon Profile” in addition to the Meta account. The profile will serve as the hub for all things avatar-based and be regarded as the metaverse’s equivalent of social media. The corporation will now refer to them as “Followers” instead of “Friends” in the Metaverse, giving the Horizon World platform an Instagram-like feel.

As the internet giant continues to prioritize privacy, Meta accounts will provide users three options: “Open to Everyone,” “Friends and Family,” and “Solo.” Each of these options has a different impact on who can connect to and view one’s account. If a user chose to skip privacy setup, they will be defaulted to “Friends and Family.”

Additionally, individuals will have the choice to make their Horizon profile private, which necessitates them accepting follow requests. Accounts for minors between the ages of 13 and 17 will be set to private by default.

The accounts are currently exclusively connected to VR-related logins, although Meta may eventually extend this capability.
