In an interview with Avalanche Studios co-founder Christofer Sundberg, it was revealed that Marvel has canceled an open world Iron Man game.
Marvel unplugged an open world Iron Man game
Before Marvel and Disney shelved the project, Avalanche Studios, the studio behind the Just Cause games, is said to have worked on an open world Iron Man game for a number of years.
Christofer Sundberg, a co-founder of Avalanche Studios, stated in an interview with MinnMax that the game “was in development for a couple of years” before it was ultimately scrapped in 2012. Sundberg claimed that it would be an open-world game where you could “take off and just fly anyplace.” Sundberg also referenced Iron Man’s repulsor gloves’ ability to strike foes through walls.

You may get a rough idea of what an open world Iron Man game from Avalanche might have looked like from the Just Cause titles, which are chaotic open world romps packed with action and explosions.
The Iron Man games we received at the time were inferior to this one from Avalanche, with both Iron Man 1 and 2’s movie adaption games receiving negative reviews. However, a VR game using Iron Man that took a twist on the character from outside the MCU was released in 2020, over ten years after Avalanche’s cancellation of Iron Man.
Compared to 2010, Marvel video games are in a very different position now. There are other Marvel-related projects in development, including Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine from Insomniac and Midnight Suns from Firaxis. In fact, the first-ever Disney and Marvel Games Showcase will take place the next month, and there, among other things, we anticipate learning more about Midnight Suns, Amy Hennig’s Marvel ensemble game from Skydance New Media.
Is a new open world Iron Man game coming?
With the end of Iron Man’s story in the Marvel cinematic universe, the hero’s popularity has dwindled considerably. The open world Iron Man game, which was not made in the first 3 phases of the cinematic universe, seems a bit weak. However, it is likely that there will be some surprises at the Disney and Marvel Games Showcase, which will be held next month. Because Disney and Marvel cannot be doing the event only for the previously announced games. We are sure that we will see previously unannounced games at the showcase. How many of these will be Marvel’s games, we do not know yet.
There will probably be at least 1 game that will progress in parallel with Marvel’s cinematic universe, and since there is no Iron Man in the universe anymore, this production will not be the open world Iron Man game we expect.
We know that the Wolverine game will be introduced at the event. In addition, the Spider-Man 2 game will also be explained in detail. Apart from these, we wouldn’t be surprised if a surprise Thor game comes out. Of course, not only Marvel games will be introduced at the Disney and Marvel Games Showcase. Other projects under the Disney brand will also be introduced. Some of the Star Wars games, which were announced last year, will definitely be explained in detail. There may also be a new Predator game coming. The last Alien game fell short of expectations. We hope that a surprise like Alien Isolation 2 will be introduced next month.
As it is known, Alien Isolation was released in late 2015 and received great acclaim. The following Alien-themed games did not even come close to the quality of Isolation. In the production, which was fictionalized like a movie, we were controlling the daughter of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), whom we remember from the Alien movie series…
