A comparison between Apple M1 and Apple M2 is here. Apple has officially introduced a new Apple M2 chip for the MacBook Air 2022 and 13-inch MacBook Pro models, but how does it compare to its previous M1 CPU?
Comparison: Apple M1 vs Apple M2
We haven’t been able to test the M2 chip yet, but we’ve compiled all of Apple’s technical specifications and performance claims to show how it stacks up against its predecessor.
Release date
The Apple M1 microprocessor first appeared in the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro in 2020. In July 2022, the Apple M2 processor will make its debut in the most recent versions of the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro.
Specs
Apple has confirmed the second-generation 5nm architecture. That’s not to say the Apple M1 chip isn’t a significant improvement over the previous version, which used a 5nm node. However, Apple has still squeezed an additional 4 billion transistors into the design to provide a significant boost in performance.
On the other hand, Apple has not boosted the CPU core count for either the M1 or M2; both have an 8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. The M2 comes with up to a 10-core GPU, whereas the M1 can only support an 8-core CPU. Apple claims that the M2 chip has up to 24GB of LPDDR5 memory. The original M1 chip, on the other hand, can only handle up to 16GB of shared memory.
Performance
The M2 chip is said to be 18% faster in terms of CPU rates, according to Apple. Because it doesn’t include any additional cores, this increase in performance is likely due to the modifications made to the Apple Silicon architecture.
The GPU in the M2 chip is 35% faster than that of the M1. The extra GPU cores have significantly impacted the M2 processor an excellent choice for heavy graphics workloads such as gaming and video editing.
