A new metaverse controller called SpinOcchio may allow virtual reality users to interact with and feel things as realistically as possible, according to its developer.
SpinOcchio metaverse controller will let users feel objects in virtual reality
The SpinOcchio, a controller, uses a spin process to distinguish the senses associated with objects to allow users to feel them in the metaverse, as if they were touching them in the real world, WALA reports.
According to researchers from the MAKinteract Lab, the metaverse controller works since they identified the distinctions in how things slide over the skin or slip into one’s hand, and they’ve linked this data with visual signals provided by the user.
The researchers conducted tests with the controller to see how “haptic realism of motion and thickness is perceived with varying visual cues in VR,” after which they were able to replicate the slippage.
According to the report, the metaverse controller will provide a realistic feel of an object and may even allow users to detect an item’s thickness without actually holding it.
The SpinOcchio is reportedly set to debut at the end of April 2022 at the 2022 ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in New Orleans between April 30 and May 5.
Even though there are numerous projects regarding the metaverse, a survey reveals the lack of interest from teens.
