Russia asked China for military and economic aid. According to reports, the United States has claimed that Russia asked China’s aid, requesting military and economic assistance in order to assist with their invasion of Ukraine and counteract sanctions. Reports also say that the US authorities have refused to release any further information regarding the types of weapons Russia requested.
The Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu told CNN that he’s “never heard” that Russia asked China for any assistance:
“China is deeply concerned and grieved on the Ukraine situation. We sincerely hope that the situation will ease and peace will return at an early date,”
Following a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia was subjected to devastating international sanctions. the US, UK, and European Union were among those who targeted Russia’s government, businesses, and President Vladimir Putin with economic penalties.
Russia asked China for military and economic aid, according to reports
On February 4, Russia’s Vladimir Putin met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. They released a statement afterward denouncing the United States and proclaiming that their friendship between Russia and China has “no limits.” Xi, on the other hand, has stopped short of fully supporting Putin on Ukraine’s invasion.
While Russian troops continue to advance in Ukraine, the country’s military is facing significant difficulties. However, despite this setback, Ukraine has received significant support from its Western allies and weapons. In many areas of Ukraine, Russian forces have been stalled but Chinese military assistance may be quite beneficial to Russia.
Following the US Senate’s approval of $13.6 billion in emergency humanitarian aid for Ukraine last week, the White House authorized $200 million in weapons to be delivered to Ukraine. The White House’s National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, expressed worry about if Russia asked China for support in an interview with CNN. He also mentioned that there is evidence to suggest China may have known about the invasion ahead of time.
Sullivan said that:
“We also are watching closely to see the extent to which China actually does provide any form of support, material support or economic support, to Russia. It is a concern of ours. And we have communicated to Beijing that we will not stand by and allow any country to compensate Russia for its losses from the economic sanctions,”
The White House has told China that there will “absolutely be consequences” if it assisted Russia in evading US sanctions, according to National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan. He didn’t say whether the United States would impose penalties on China if it aided Russia.
