On Sunday, The Pokémon Company hosted an event during which they unveiled two new games in the series: Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. The games are expected to release for the Nintendo Switch in late 2022, and the brief trailer brought to mind Pokémon Sword and Shield, which was released in 2019.
A new step for the series in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
The games are characterized as an “open-world adventure” by the developer Game Freak, who adds that they “provide a new evolutionary step for the Pokémon main series.” The new starters may be seen in the picture below.
The official description for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet was:
“Trainers can explore an open world where various towns with no borders blend seamlessly into the wilderness. Pokémon can be seen everywhere in this wide-open world — in the skies, in the sea, and on the streets.
As one of the main characters, trainers will jump into the world of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet to begin their adventure, where they will have a different outfits depending on which game they are playing. Trainers will then choose either Sprigatito, the grass cat pokémon, Fuecoco, the fire croc pokémon, or Quaxly, the duckling Pokémon to be their first partner pokémon before setting off on their journey.”
Updates to other Pokémon titles
The second big news is that Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which was just released in January, will be receiving a software update called “daybreak.” It is available now for free, and it includes a new quest to pursue. The Pokémon Company also revealed that it is working on an animated series set in the Hisui region from the game, which is expected to premiere during the fall.
Also part of the news was an enormous update for Pokémon Go, which is set to begin on March 1st and will add creatures from the Alola region, which debuted in Pokémon Sun and Moon. The competitive battle game Pokémon Unite will also get some new features, including more intense fights called fury battles.
