Maserati intends to compete in the electric motor racing series, Formula E, beginning in 2023, becoming the first Italian brand to do so.
Maserati will compete in Formula E in 2023
For the first time in more than six decades, Maserati is entering a Formula competition. Maserati has a long history in Formula 1 and was one of the most successful teams during the 1950s. The automaker’s two-seater MC12 won 14 FIA GT sports car titles between 2004 and 2010.
Maserati is going to apply what it learns from Formula E tracks into its Folgore EV lineup.
Senior VP of Motorsport, Jean-Marc Finot stated that:
“Going electric is the next logical step. We are trying to avoid unnecessary air openings and air outlets, in contrast to some of our competitors that seem to depend on them to convey a message. In our case, it’s about the purity of the body. We can further purify the car by reducing the amount of air intakes and air outlets, which will help us tell the design story even better.”
Maserati will compete in Formula E as the series progresses to the Gen3 car. The Gen3 will be the most energy-efficient race car on the planet, according to Formula E and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). According to them, the EV will generate at least 40% of the energy used in a race by utilizing regenerative braking.
