Ubisoft has become the first big game publisher to introduce in-game NFTs, these collectibles are coming to one of the most important titles of the company: Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
Ubisoft to release in-game NFTs for Ghost Recon Breakpoint
This is the first time that a major video game publisher has put NFTs into a major game. Companies like Square Enix or Zynga have expressed their positive feelings when it comes to NFTs but none of them took any action.
Non-fungible tokens often referred to as NFTs, are blockchain-based assets that demonstrate ownership and provenance of digital things like images, videos, and even real world assets. Ubisoft will call its NFTs “Digits.”
Ubisoft chose the Tezos blockchain for its blockchain technology and the company expresses its concerns about sustainability and the environment.
“A single transaction on Tezos uses roughly the same amount of energy as streaming 30 seconds of video,” Ubisoft stated.
Ubisoft’s blockchain product director, Baptiste Chardon, stated that:
“Blockchain’s decentralized technology enables gaming companies to move beyond current limitations set by more traditional technologies and lay the foundation of an ambitious and exciting new ecosystem that is, by design, truly community driven. While this can seem trivial at first, it is a totally new approach compared to the walled-garden digital environments we are used to, and it changes the videogame industry by introducing concepts like uniqueness and control, and thus value distribution in our game worlds.”
