Barbados claims to be the first nation in the world to establish a digital embassy in a metaverse.
The Caribbean island signed a partnership with Decentraland, a firm that creates and hosts a user-owned, 3D digital world with 90,601 plots of “real estate.”

The metaverse is a speculative internet creation in the 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash that refers to a three-dimensional virtual reality version of the internet in which people are represented as avatars and move through a digital replica of reality.
In 2017, Decentraland developed its own metaverse, allowing users to develop on their land plots, establish online games and gambling services, and more.
Barbados is also looking to establish virtual embassies with other metaverse providers, including Somnium Space and SuperWorld.
Other nations are expected to follow suit, allowing their citizens to conduct business in a similar way.
