Apple Store employees in California will be compensated for the time they spent checking their luggage for possible stolen goods while they were off the clock after years of litigation. $30 million is expected to be paid out.
Apple will pay $30 million to workers over its bag check policy
According to documents filed in the Northern District of California and published by Bloomberg, 14,683 employees in total who worked for Apple from July 2009 and December 2015 may receive a portion of the claim. In 2013, two Apple Store employees filed a class action lawsuit covering the firm’s 52 locations in California.
Employees in the complaint said they would frequently be kept waiting for up to 45 minutes after their shift for this search to conclude, and they would not be paid for that period. Apple claimed that the searches were required in order to ensure that employees did not steal goods. The case, according to the complaint, revealed that Tim Cook was largely unaware of the policy until two employees complained directly to him about it.
According to Bloomberg’s report, Apple will fork over $29.9 million in back pay to workers who were affected by the policy in California. The agreement must be approved by U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup.
