Tesla has introduced a new at-home charger that works with other electric cars, as observed by Electrek. On the same day that it began allowing non-Tesla EVs to charge at Supercharger stations in the Netherlands, Tesla quietly added a new Level 2 wall charger to its online store.
The new charger takes a standard J1772 plug, rather than Tesla’s proprietary one, so it should function in North America with other electric cars. It’s also reasonably priced at $415 (though a professional electrician must install it). The Tesla is equipped with 9.6kW charging capability, which can be used indoors or outside, according to the company. It’s essentially a reworked version of the “Gen 2” Tesla home charger that doesn’t have any of the more sophisticated functions (such as Wi-Fi) available on the Gen 3 model sold by Tesla today.

Tesla has dominated the electric vehicle market for years, and the company’s new wall charger (as well as the Supercharger opening) suggests it is ready to take advantage of the many new vehicles that are on the market or approaching release. While it may not make Tesla a large sum of money like its other vehicle business, there could be potential here. While many legacy automakers offer their own branded home charging stations, the third-party home charger market is filled with mostly unfamiliar names.
