WhatsApp unveils a new feature for chat backups, from now on our conversations will be protected with end-to-end encryption.
Last week, WhatsApp suffered a major outage, affecting millions of users all over the world. Today it takes a step forward by launching an end-to-end encryption feature for chat backups. In WhatsApp, we can create chat backups very easily, although until now they did not have end-to-end encryption that offers users an important extra layer of security.
Create chat backups with end-to-end encryption in WhatsApp
A year has passed since WhatsApp unveiled this new feature for chat backups, now it is finally being rolled out. The company made an official statement on its blog.
With this new feature, you are going to be able to protect chat backups with a single 64-digit security key. The important thing about this encryption system is that it works on both Android and iOS.
It also allows you to store the key manually or with a password. If you decide to save it with a password, you’ll be able to retrieve the encryption key and therefore decrypt the copy using a security module connected to your hardware.
How to use end-to-end encryption for chat backups on WhatsApp?
The most crucial aspect of this end-to-end encryption is that neither the service provider, such as WhatsApp nor anyone else will be able to access the contents of your chat backups. To be able to use this feature just enter the settings and go to Chat > Backups > end-to-end encryption. We will click on continue in the windows that emerge to finally create the key.
It was a necessary precaution in terms of WhatsApp messaging privacy and security, as we frequently exchange sensitive data. If you do not see the option available, you only need to update WhatsApp to the latest version available.
