Whether or not Google could indeed be preparing to stop offering unlimited storage for WhatsApp backups on Google Drive. The popular messaging service WhatsApp is reportedly preparing to offer greater controls to users who may pick the size of their backups.
WhatsApp backup update: Additional controls to define the size of backups
The only way to reduce WhatsApp backups’ space requirements is to remove video files from them.
According to what was found in the latest beta of WhatsApp for Android by the publication WABetaInfo is that later there will also be the possibility of indicating other types of media that you do not want to include in the backups. So users will be able to choose more precisely what they want to back up.
These new features are present in the testing stage and will be implemented via a future upgrade for all users, according to WABetaInfo. While the new controls aren’t currently available to users, it’s expected that they will be able to clearly identify what they want for their backups in the near future.
In this way, WhatsApp would anticipate the possibility that users could be limited in storage capacity on Google Drive to save backups of their WhatsApp conversations.
What we do not realize now is that if it is implemented, the popular messaging platform will not allow users to add additional alternatives for cloud storage services.
In any case, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
